Tap a place in the list to see it on the map, or use Near me to sort by distance. Orange dots are 100% gluten-free kitchens. Gray dots are shared kitchens with a solid celiac protocol.
Why Barcelona is easy for celiacs
There are a lot of fully gluten-free kitchens. More than 30 places on the map above are 100% gluten free.
The local celiac association accredits restaurants. The Associació Celíacs de Catalunya has accredited more than 300 restaurants, bakeries, and shops in Catalonia and Menorca. Its seal is the best sign a shared kitchen knows what it’s doing.
EU rules help. Restaurants have to be able to tell you which of the 14 major allergens, gluten included, are in each dish.

Breakfast in Barcelona usually means a croissant or toast, so these 100% gluten-free cafés make mornings easy:
- Bloome by Sasha, with three locations (Passeig de Sant Joan, 80 has the bakery). Açaí bowls, pancakes, and eggs benedict for about €10-15 a plate.
- Gula Sana (Carrer de la Diputació, 361). Cakes, doughnuts, and sandwiches.
- Glutery (Carrer del Torrent de l’Olla, 85, Gràcia). Empanadas, focaccia, and pastries.
- Celicioso (inside El Corte Inglés, Avinguda Diagonal, 617).
Gluten-free bakeries in Barcelona
- Jansana Gluten Free Bakery (Carrer de Balmes, 106). A 75-year-old family bakery with a dedicated gluten-free workshop: pastries, ensaïmadas, croissants, and custom cakes. One reviewer notes that some of its flours use gluten-free wheat starch, which a few very sensitive celiacs avoid.
- Gluten Tag! (Travessera de Gràcia, 173). Multigrain and teff breads and seasonal sweets.
- Cøliaki (Carrer de Balmes, 219), Sana Locura (Carrer de Muntaner, 478), and La Consciente (Carrer de Viladomat, 134, sourdough and vegan pastries).
- chök (Carrer de les Ramelleres, 26). Only this chök shop is fully gluten free. The chain’s other shops sell regular pastries.
Gluten-free churros
Xurreria Can Vernet (Carrer del Comte Borrell, 294) makes churros with and without gluten, using separate equipment for the gluten-free batch. The gluten-free churros are loop-shaped so you can tell them apart. It isn’t a fully gluten-free shop, so ask about cross-contact if you’re very sensitive.
Shared kitchens that get it right
- Can Conesa (Carrer de la Llibreteria, 1, Gothic Quarter). Sandwiches on gluten-free bread from a dedicated griddle, accredited by the Catalan association.
- Out of China (Carrer d’Aribau, 112). Almost the whole Chinese menu is gluten free or adaptable, and it’s accredited. No reservations.
- Il Piccolo Focone (Carrer del Dos de Maig, 268). Pizza, fresh pasta, and risotto, approved by the association.
Skip: one local guide removed Trópico Brunch from its list after a reader reported that gluten-free bread shares an oven with regular bread.
The tapas that hide gluten
Pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomato) comes with almost everything. Ask them not to bring it, or ask for gluten-free bread.
Croquetas are made with a flour-based béchamel and breadcrumbs. Only eat them at a dedicated gluten-free place.
Patatas bravas can have flour in the sauce, and the potatoes usually share a fryer with breaded food.
Calamares a la romana are dredged in wheat flour. The Fish & Chips Shop makes a gluten-free version.
Usually safe: jamón, tortilla española, grilled fish and meat (a la plancha), and most paella. For paella, ask whether the stock comes from a bouillon cube, since some contain gluten.
Spanish phrases for celiacs
- Sin gluten means gluten free. In Catalan, it’s sense gluten.
- Soy celíaco or soy celíaca means “I have celiac disease.”
- ¿Tiene freidora aparte? means “Do you have a separate fryer?”
One more tip: a lot of gluten-free places close on Sundays, so plan that day ahead.
