San Francisco is one of the easiest big cities in the US to eat gluten free. There’s a fully gluten-free Italian trattoria that opened in 2026, a gluten-free Mexican restaurant by the Embarcadero, a gluten-free cocktail bar with a dedicated fryer, and a dedicated gluten-free bakery inside the Ferry Building that has been there for years.
The catch is the city’s most famous foods: sourdough bread bowls, clam chowder, and Mission burritos. Here’s where to eat, and how to get through the tourist spots safely.

Tap a place to see it on the map, or use Near me to sort by distance. Orange dots are 100% gluten-free kitchens. Gray dots are shared kitchens with a dedicated fryer, grill, or gluten-free menu.
100% gluten-free restaurants
- Clementina (343 Clement St, Inner Richmond). The biggest gluten-free opening of 2026. This Italian trattoria opened in March with a completely gluten-free kitchen, from the team behind Montesacro. Expect pasta, pizza, risotto, seafood, and a Roman-style flatbread made with their own gluten-free flour blend. Diners single out the focaccia and gnocchi. It’s closed Monday and Tuesday, so check hours before you go.
- XICA (1265 Battery St, Levi’s Plaza). A 100% gluten-free Mexican restaurant near the Embarcadero. Go for the chilaquiles and shrimp tacos, and don’t skip the churros.
- Stoa (701 Haight St, Lower Haight). A cocktail bar with a fully gluten-free kitchen and a dedicated fryer, so you can order wings, tacos, and donuts without asking about the oil. The food is gluten free; ask about specific drinks.
- Kitava (2011 Mission St, Mission). A 100% gluten-free paleo kitchen with bowls, chicken nuggets, and fried plantains. It also cooks the food at Buck Wild Brewing, a gluten-free brewery in Oakland.
- Pica Pica Arepa Kitchen (401 Valencia St, Mission). Venezuelan arepas, long listed as 100% gluten free. It’s now under new ownership, and one celiac reviewer raised concerns about ingredient sourcing, so confirm before ordering.
- Asian Box (2031 Chestnut St, Marina). A 100% gluten-free, Vietnamese-inspired fast-casual chain. Handy to know: there’s also one at SFO, in Terminal G.
- Moon Bowls (60 Morris St, SoMa). 100% gluten-free Korean bowls and potstickers. It’s takeout and delivery only, which makes it a good hotel-room dinner.
Gluten-free bakeries in San Francisco
San Francisco has fewer dedicated gluten-free bakeries than you’d expect for its size, but the ones it has are good.

- Mariposa Baking Company (Ferry Building, Shop 32). San Francisco’s best-known dedicated gluten-free bakery, founded in 2004 and in the Ferry Building since 2009. Get a croissant, a pain au chocolat, or a breakfast sandwich, and take a loaf of bread for later. Its Oakland shop (5427 Telegraph Ave) has a bigger selection and parking.
- Flour Craft Bakery (129 Miller Ave, Mill Valley, and San Anselmo). A 100% gluten-free bakery and café in Marin, about 30 minutes north across the Golden Gate Bridge. Celiac travelers rate its focaccia and sourdough chocolate chip cookies among the best in the Bay Area.
- Wholesome Bakery, the city’s gluten-free and vegan bakery on Divisadero, is temporarily closed while it relocates. Check before you go.

- Camino Alto (1715 Union St, Cow Hollow). A gluten-free, farm-to-table spot for breakfast, brunch, and lunch, with dinner on Friday and Saturday.
- The Game Parlour (1342 Irving St, Inner Sunset). A board game café with a gluten-free waffle menu, a short walk from Golden Gate Park. It’s 99% gluten free: one coffee drink uses regular cookies.
- As Quoted (3613 Sacramento St). Breakfast and lunch, almost entirely gluten free. The exception is gluten-removed beer, which isn’t safe for celiacs. It closes at 3 p.m.
- Crown & Crumpet Tea Salon (1746 Post St, Japantown). Not a gluten-free kitchen, but it serves a full gluten-free afternoon tea, with scones, sandwiches, and desserts, for a small upcharge.
- Cafe de Casa (2701 Leavenworth St, near Fisherman’s Wharf, and other locations). Brazilian tapioca crepes, which are naturally gluten free, made on a dedicated grill.
Gluten-free pizza in San Francisco
Several of the city’s best pizzerias offer a gluten-free crust. Eater SF’s guide to gluten-free pizza lists Square Pie Guys, Delarosa, Flour + Water Pizzeria, Joyride Pizza, and Presidio Pizza Co. All of them are shared kitchens, and most bake gluten-free pies in the same oven as regular ones, so ask how they prevent cross-contact. If you want pizza with no risk, go to Clementina.
Gluten free at San Francisco’s tourist spots
Sourdough and clam chowder
San Francisco sourdough is wheat bread, and the clam chowder served in it is usually thickened with flour. Skip the bread bowls at Boudin and the chowder stands at Fisherman’s Wharf. If you want chowder, ask whether it’s thickened with flour or with potato.
Fisherman’s Wharf
The wharf is mostly fried seafood and sourdough. Two safer options: In-N-Out (333 Jefferson St), the only In-N-Out in the city, which cooks its fries in a dedicated fryer, and Cafe de Casa’s tapioca crepes. At In-N-Out, order your burger “protein style” (wrapped in lettuce) and tell them you have a gluten allergy.
Mission burritos
The burrito joints in the Mission, like La Taqueria and El Farolito, are not gluten-free kitchens. Flour tortillas are steamed and pressed on the same equipment as everything else, so a burrito bowl is still a risk when the line is long. For Mexican food, XICA is the safe choice.
Chinatown and dim sum
Most dim sum is made with wheat wrappers, and Oriental Pearl, which had safe gluten-free dim sum, closed in 2023. Henry’s Hunan and China Live have gluten-free menus but no gluten-free dumplings.
Giants games at Oracle Park
The Hearth Table, near center field, serves gluten-free flatbreads, hot dogs, and salads, and the bars carry gluten-free beer and cider.
Flying out of SFO
Asian Box in Terminal G is 100% gluten free. Find Me Gluten Free also lists gluten-free options at Ladle & Leaf (Terminal 3) and Amy’s Drive Thru (Terminal 1).
Worth the trip across the bridge
Copita (739 Bridgeway, Sausalito) is a 100% gluten-free Mexican restaurant on the Sausalito waterfront. Get the fried fish tacos and a blood orange margarita. Pair it with a ferry ride from the Ferry Building and a stop at Mariposa on the way.
