McDonald's Gluten Free: What Celiacs Can Eat in the US, and the Countries With Gluten-Free Buns (2026 Map)

Updated:

Is McDonald’s gluten free? In the United States, barely. There’s no gluten-free bun, McDonald’s doesn’t call any US menu item gluten free, and even the fries contain wheat.

Cross the Atlantic, though, and it’s a different restaurant. In 13 countries you can order a Big Mac, a McRoyal, or a cheeseburger on a gluten-free bun, and in some of them the fries are gluten free too. Here’s what you can actually eat at McDonald’s as a celiac, at home and abroad, with a map of every country we could verify.

Quick answer: is McDonald’s gluten free?

In the US: no. McDonald’s says on its own nutrition page that it does not promote any US menu item as gluten free. There’s no gluten-free bun, the fries contain a wheat-derived flavoring, and the kitchens are shared. A few items are gluten free by ingredient, but nothing is certified.

In 13 other countries: partly. McDonald’s in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Argentina serve burgers on a gluten-free bun. How carefully they’re prepared varies a lot by country.

What’s gluten free at McDonald’s in the US?

None of this is certified, and everything is made in a shared kitchen. Celiacs who react to traces should treat McDonald’s US as a last resort.

Usually OK by ingredientAsk firstAvoid
Bunless beef patty (hamburger, Quarter Pounder)Sundaes (toppings vary)French fries (wheat in the flavoring)
Apple slicesPlain vanilla soft serve in a dishEvery bun, muffin, biscuit, and wrap
Sodas, juice, milk, plain coffeeShakes (shared spindles)Chicken McNuggets, McChicken, McCrispy
Packaged condiments like ketchup and mustardEggs and breakfast meats without the muffinFilet-O-Fish
Specialty McCafé drinks (syrups vary)McFlurry with Oreo or cookie pieces, pies, hotcakes

The bunless burger. The beef patty itself is just beef, salt, and pepper, but it’s cooked on a shared grill and assembled on surfaces covered in bun crumbs. Ask them to change gloves. It’s a gluten-limiting option, not a celiac-safe one.

Shakes and sundaes. Some guides list the basic shakes and sundaes as gluten free by ingredient. The problem is the equipment: shakes and McFlurries are mixed with shared spindles that also blend Oreo pieces.

Are McDonald’s fries gluten free?

It depends entirely on the country. This is the most-searched McDonald’s gluten question, and the answer in the US is the opposite of most of Europe.

Countries with a gluten-free bun at McDonald’s, one by one

Spain 🇪🇸

The gold standard. Since 2011 every McDonald’s in Spain has offered a gluten-free bun made by Berlys and carrying the “Controlado por FACE” seal from the Spanish celiac federation, at no extra cost. It works on most beef burgers. Ask for: pan sin gluten. It’s also available in the Canary and Balearic Islands.

Portugal 🇵🇹

Gluten-free versions of the Big Mac, McRoyal Deluxe, McRoyal Cheese, cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, and hamburger. According to the Portuguese celiac association, the rice-and-corn bun is individually packed and heated in its own Teflon bag, away from the toasters. Order at the counter, not the kiosk, and allow a few extra minutes. Ask for: sem glúten.

Italy 🇮🇹

One item: the Gluten Free Burger, a Schär bun with beef and two slices of cheese, cooked in sealed, ovenable packaging to avoid cross-contact. Schär says it’s available at all McDonald’s in Italy. It isn’t part of the Italian Celiac Association’s dining program.

Switzerland 🇨🇭

A hamburger, cheeseburger, and double cheeseburger on Schär sourdough buns made from rice flour and corn starch, plus a gluten-free Happy Meal. Burgers come with a “glutenfrei” sticker. Ask for: glutenfrei.

Austria 🇦🇹

McDonald’s Austria’s April 2026 ingredient list still includes a gluten-free bun, available on several burgers and McMuffins for a small surcharge. Celiac bloggers have reported regular and gluten-free buns going through the same toaster, and the program isn’t certified by the Austrian celiac group, so ask how yours is prepared.

Netherlands 🇳🇱

Hamburger, cheeseburger, and Quarter Pounder on a gluten-free bun, but only at participating restaurants. McDonald’s Netherlands is part of the Dutch gluten-free hospitality alliance, and participating locations are checked yearly by the Dutch celiac society (NCV). How to order: at the kiosk, pick your burger, tap personalize, and choose glutenvrij.

Hungary 🇭🇺

A double cheeseburger, McRoyal, and pork McFarm on Schär gluten-free buns, at most but not all restaurants. Ask for: gluténmentes.

Czech Republic 🇨🇿

A gluten-free bun on the McRoyal and Big Tasty Bacon for a small surcharge, chosen as a customization at the kiosk. Ask for: bezlepková houska.

Sweden 🇸🇪

You can swap in a gluten-free bun on any burger that has no other gluten in it, so not on breaded chicken or anything with crispy onions. Ask for: glutenfritt bröd.

Norway 🇳🇴

McDonald’s Norway says every one of its burgers can be ordered on a gluten-free bun. Ask for: glutenfritt brød.

Finland 🇫🇮

A gluten-free bun from the Finnish bakery Moilas on most burgers, and McDonald’s Finland says its fries are always gluten free. That makes it one of the best countries for a full meal. Ask for: gluteeniton sämpylä.

Denmark 🇩🇰

A gluten-free rice-and-corn bun on most burgers (not breaded products or anything with crispy onions). McDonald’s Denmark is upfront that its kitchens handle regular buns constantly and aren’t a gluten-free environment. Ask for: glutenfri bolle.

Argentina 🇦🇷

The newest addition. In June 2026, McDonald’s Argentina launched a gluten-free bun made by Smams at all its restaurants, for the Big Mac, Cuarto de Libra (Quarter Pounder with Cheese), Doble Cuarto de Libra, and McNífica. Ask for: sin TACC, the Argentine label for gluten free.

Countries without a gluten-free bun

How safe is a McDonald’s gluten-free bun, really?

A gluten-free bun doesn’t make a gluten-free kitchen. McDonald’s doesn’t certify any item as gluten free worldwide, and preparation differs a lot:

Tips that help anywhere:

  1. Order at the counter and say you have celiac disease, not just that you prefer gluten free.
  2. Look for the sticker or special wrapper. Most countries mark gluten-free burgers.
  3. Skip anything breaded, even in countries with a gluten-free bun.
  4. Check the fries country by country. The US answer doesn’t apply in Europe, and vice versa.
